Plymouth Book Fair

 The second annual Plymouth Book Fair is next week! Stop by the arcade on Tuesday, December 10th through Thursday, December 12th to purchase books from our curated selection of children and adult offerings. 

 As part of the Book Fair, we are hosting two special author readings in the Reception Room and hope to see you there.

 On Friday, December 13th at 12:30pm, local children’s author Cara Devins will read from The Brilliant Ms. Bangle.

 This year, we have partnered with Brooklyn Book Bodega, whose mission is to increase the number of 100+ book homes for kids 0-18 in NYC. Brooklyn Book Bodega provides access to and ownership of books, builds community, and creates a passion for learning through free events and literacy-based community programming. Please consider donating a book on behalf of this Brooklyn Navy Yard non-profit. 

 Plymouth’s Annual Toy Drive

 Plymouth families have always been so generous in their support of Plymouth’s Annual Toy Drive to support Colony Houses. The details are below.

 We are grateful to return to the Plymouth tradition of giving joy with the Annual Toy Drive for Colony Houses South Brooklyn.

Colony has offered humanitarian services to the disadvantaged people of Brooklyn since 1904, runs over 25 daycare centers and is in great need. In the wake of Covid their work has become more necessary than ever, as has the need for joy.

 You may either ship your toys directly to Plymouth Church Toy Drive (75 Hicks Street, Brooklyn NY 11201) or drop them off Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm at 75 Hicks Street, or Sundays 10:00am-noon in the bin at the Sanctuary entrance.

 Our goal is 200 toys by Monday, December 16th.

 Family Holiday Sing

 Our Holiday Sing will take place on Thursday, December 19th at 9:00am in the Church Sanctuary (entrance on Orange Street).

All Plymouth families (both AM and PM classes) are invited.

 BGR children will be dropped off in their classroom at 8:55 as per usual, because they will be playing music during the Sing. BGR grownups will join everyone in the Sanctuary.

 After the Holiday Sing, we will all gather in the gym for a holiday cookie party! Dismissal for the Winter Holidays follows the party.

 Required Influenza Vaccine

 The NYC Department of Health (DOH) mandates that all children receive one dose of the influenza vaccine (flu shot) by December 31, 2024. We must have a record of your child’s vaccine by that time, or we will be out of compliance with the DOH and subject to fines. Due to this, children will not be permitted to attend school when we return from the Winter Holidays on January 6, 2025, without proof of their influenza immunization. 

Please email a copy of your child’s proof of vaccination to pcsadmin@plymouthchurch.org.

 Community News

  PS8 is hosting their first annual second-hand and vintage marketplace on Saturday, 10am-4pm, in the PS8 Multi-Purpose Room. They look forward to bringing everyone together, merging sustainability mindfulness with the chance to raise critical funds for the school.

All proceeds will go to support PS8!
Parents, we will have a spot set aside for kids to do art while you shop.
Don't forget to bring your own reusable bag!

This event is open to the public, so spread the word!

Thanksgiving Food Drive

 Plymouth Church School is partnering with Rising Ground on their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Rising Ground is a leading nonprofit human services organization providing children, adults, and families in the greater New York City area with the resources and skills needed to rise above adversity and positively direct their lives. Drop off your donations in the marked box in our lobby. The last day to donate is next Friday.

 Family Chapel

 Our next Family Chapel is on Friday, November 22nd at 11:00am in the Reception Room. Grownups and caregivers are invited to join us. Parents and children in our afternoon classes are also invited.

 The children in our Pineapple and Orange Rooms will not attend Chapel until later in the spring, but parents are of course invited to come.

 There are a few things we ask of you when you join us for Family Chapel:

• Please leave all strollers outside in Beecher Garden.

• Younger children are welcome, but we cannot accommodate strollers and carriages in the Reception Room.

• There is no eating or drinking in the Reception Room. 

• If your child chooses to sit with you, it is important that you make sure they rejoin their class before you leave.

• Please help us create an atmosphere of quiet, respect and caring at Family Chapel.

 Our wonderful psychological consultant Kate Wechsler has worked with Plymouth for over 25 years and has helped many families tackle the conundrums of parenting. Plymouth hosts monthly office hours with Kate which provide an opportunity for you to meet individually with her to talk about issues and concerns you might have and get support. These meetings will be on Zoom.

 Upcoming dates are January 17th and February 28th. There are half hour appointments available between 9:30am and noon. Please email pcsadmin@plymouthchurch.org to book an appointment.

Fall Family Day is Tomorrow!

 Come celebrate fall with the Plymouth community at our Fall Family Day tomorrow from 10:00am to 12:00pm. There will be fun activities for the children and cider and doughnuts! What a wonderful way to connect with other Plymouth families.

 Parent Teacher Conferences

 Evening parent teacher conferences are on November 12th. School will be open with a regular schedule. There is no childcare for evening conferences.

 Talking About Race with Young Children – Parent Talk with Lori Riddick

 For the past several years, Plymouth faculty have been working closely with Lori Riddick, an equity and leadership expert, on how to talk about race and racial justice with young children. We have invited her to talk about these important issues with you, our families, on November 15th at 9:00am. This is essential work that we are doing as a community and we want all of you to attend.

We often avoid talking about race with our young children but, whether we like it or not, children notice similarities and differences between people. When we are silent, they are left to draw their own conclusions about what “different” means. Without coaching or support, their conclusions often reflect and reinforce biases. Fortunately – when we are intentional – we can impact the ways that our children see, categorize, and make meaning about race.

Please join us to begin to build a foundation of common language and common strategies that can be used by the community to support ongoing conversations about race.

Please enjoy this fall update from our Librarian, Sarah.

 We are happy to share that we have a beautiful new library. It is located on the second floor across the hall from the Red Room. Custom-made wooden bookshelves house our collection.

 The move to the new space gave us an opportunity to update and grow our library. Our goal continues to be to engage the children with quality picture books, both fiction and non-fiction. Inspired by the words of Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, we want our children to see books as mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors. Mirrors where they see themselves, windows where they can look into and wonder about other people’s lives, and sliding glass doors to open and walk through to new and engaging worlds.  

 Every week, I bring a selection of books into the classrooms based on conversations with the children and their teachers. These books reflect the children’s interests, classroom learning and project work, and spark curiosity - helping to nurture a love of books and exploration.

 I invite you to chat with your child about the new library and books they’ve read at school. Some questions to ask include: Have you seen the new library? What did you notice? What books have your teachers read to you? Has Sarah, the librarian, visited your class? What is your favorite book right now? Why do you like that one?

 Parent Teacher Conferences

 Parent Teacher conferences are coming up on November 5th (all day) and November 12th (evening). You have already received an email from your child’s teachers to sign up for a conference. School will be closed for conferences on Tuesday, November 5th, with no children in attendance. During your conference time, childcare will be available in the gym between 8:30am and 3:00pm.

 School is open on November 12th with a regular schedule. There is no childcare for evening conferences.

 Conferences are a wonderful opportunity to gain insights into your child’s life at school and help formulate goals for the school year with your child’s teaching team.

 Lori Taliaferro Riddick is an equity and leadership expert who works within school communities to bring an anti-racist lens to teaching and learning. Lori co-founded Raising Race Conscious Children, and leads workshops with school leaders, teachers, and families on how to talk about race with young children. Her workshops focus on building practical knowledge that educators and family members can quickly implement in their classrooms and homes respectively. Lori is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where she received a B.A. in Urban Studies and a Masters of Science in Education.

 Label All Clothing

 Now that the weather has gotten cooler, your children are wearing more layers to school. Please label all clothing, shoes, bags, scooters and helmets with your child’s name. This greatly increases the likelihood that a missing item will be returned to you and helps teachers keep all those articles of clothing organized.
